If you are trying to lose weight, you may often be tempted to hop on your
bathroom weight scale to see how much weight you have lost. But the scale
may not be your best measure of success.
For one thing, weight scales measure your weight in pounds or kilograms,
but unless you have a special kind of scale, you will not be able to
determine how much of your weight is water, how much is fat and how much is
muscle.
Since muscle weight more than fat but takes up less room, you can
actually get thinner and not lose weight.
You can get thinner and add weight as well, if you are doing a lot of
strength training exercise that tones your muscles. If this is the case, you
will probably also find that you can eat more without gaining additional
weight. If you are one who needs to see numbers as a measure of success, try
to find a bathroom scale that can tell you how your weight is distributed.
There are scales that will give you your composition of body fat as well
as your overall weight. There are also scales that can tell you how much
water weight your body carries. Of course, these scales are more expensive
than a basic scale that gives an overall measure of your weight.
If you are really interested in the details of your body composition, you
may be able to find a physician or fitness trainer that has a body
composition analyzer. This is a special scale that measures not only overall
body weight, but also body fat percentage, hydration level, lean body mass,
BMI and more.
